Site Visit Summary (OBGYN)

For this rotation my site evaluator was professor Melendez. It was my third time having and evaluation with Professor Melendez, therefore I was very comfortable. For my first visit I went in with one H&P and 5 pharm cards. We first went over the cards and then went on to discuss the case. We then talked a bit about the management for patients with preeclampsia and agreed that the plan I had was acceptable. We also discussed the complications that may arise in patients with preeclampsia and the importance of labs and evaluating the patient periodically for symptoms and magnesium toxicity. We spoke about how management would differ in a patient in the third trimester vs the 2nd trimester. One thing I learned from this evaluation was that a patient was still at risk for preeclampsia when they are postpartum, and therefore require strict monitoring if there are high BPs present.

The second evaluation was a week from the first, and I presented two H&Ps one article and 5 pharm cards. The first case I presented was about a nulliparous female with and ovarian mass. The second case was about a patient who presented with an incomplete abortion. The article I presented was a Cochrane review on the medical treatments for incomplete abortion. Professor Melendez went on to discuss ways to counsel patients who are having a possible incomplete abortion and stressed the importance of providing patients with information and options of the available treatments. I learned there are a few appropriate and acceptable treatments for incomplete abortion, however the end decision of which treatment is best for the patient is  based off of that patient’s preference.

It was a pleasure having professor Melendez as my evaluator once again. I appreciate that he shares his insight and experiences with us during these evaluations.
